The Beautiful Meaning Behind Yoruba Names

Discover the rich tradition of Yoruba naming and why we chose the names Oladapo, Olabisi, and Olayemi for our dolls.

O

Olamide

Founder

In Yoruba culture, names are far more than labels — they're prophecies, blessings, and statements of identity. A child's name often reflects the circumstances of their birth, family hopes for their future, or acknowledgment of divine intervention.

This rich naming tradition is why we chose Yoruba names for our Pocketlings dolls. Each name carries deep meaning that we want children to internalise as they play.

Oladapo

Oladapo means "wealth associates with more wealth." This name speaks to abundance, prosperity, and the idea that good things attract more good things. When a child plays with Oladapo, they're reminded that they are a magnet for blessings.

Olabisi

Olabisi translates to "joy has multiplied" or "wealth has given birth to more." It speaks to the idea that abundance grows and joy increases. Olabisi reminds children that their presence multiplies joy in the world.

Olayemi

Olayemi means "I am worthy of wealth" or "prosperity befits me." This is perhaps the most powerful affirmation — a direct statement of inherent worthiness. Every child who holds Olayemi is reminded that they deserve good things simply because of who they are.

The Abundance Collection

Together, these three dolls — The Abundance Collection — create a powerful trilogy of affirmation. They teach children that wealth isn't just about money, but about richness of spirit, joy, and self-worth.

By bringing these names into play time, we hope to plant seeds of confidence and cultural pride that will bloom throughout children's lives.
